Installation made by Joanna Zabielska, Cat Jimenez and Miloš Vučićević August 2020 / Improper Walls / Vienna

As a part of the & initiative, artists Joanna Zabielska, Cat Jimenez and Miloš Vučićević have been invited by Improper Walls curators to collaborate on an art show.Their installation represents the unity of three artistic practices (the methods, approach and process of creating). While dealing with social and spatial issues, the transformation of the objects, as well as objects of ”mass-production”, the trio involves a performative approach set in a forest atmosphere as an interactive part in itself. The idea behind it is closely related to both a migrant situation and the situation of being somewhere else; transforming the gallery space into “elsewhere space”, or “somewhere space”.In its physical presentation, the artwork questions the definition of polarity and the perception of time. Although it is aiming to decentralize our geographical positions and alienate the viewer from the defined perceptions, this xeno-realistic interaction in space is primarily a conversation about East and West points of view, the demystification of a subject coming from other countries and the experience of living in the West through the forms of newly created constraints due to COVID-19.

Joanna Zabielska works on the intersection of art, design, architecture and urban planning, approaching the social and spatial issues of the transformation of the city. Using different media – from inflatable textile installations to cooking performances, she develops participatory, site- specific projects together with the local community. Being based both in Vienna and Warsaw, she also realises projects in an international and multicultural environment (in the last years often in Caucasus – Georgia and Armenia, Middle East – Lebanon, currently also in New York).joannazabielska.com_

Cat Jimenez is a Vienna-based artist who was born as Paz Katrina Jimenez in the Philippines and moved to Austria with her family by the age of 4. Her background in visual art and street dance enable her to move between the expressiveness of hip-hop and house culture and the minimalist aesthetics of contemporary art. Creating this unique style has enabled her to win several Austrian battles in the categories experimental and all stylez. In 2015 she was an invited battle guest for Flavourama in Salzburg. Since 2015 Cat is mainly active in the theatre. Together with the visual artist Maiko Sakurai Karner they founded the company “same same” in 2019 and premiered their piece “What’s the difference?” in Vienna. It deals with the duality of living inbetween 2 cultures and received highly positive critics. whadupcat.tumblr.com
